This past winter I had a programmable, or setback, thermostat installed in my home. I had no idea of the energy cost savings that I would experience from making this simple change! The thermostat was programmed to my family's at-home and sleeping schedule. This was new to me, as I had always manually adjusted the thermostat in the past, if and when I remembered to do so.
The energy savings I experienced was incredible! My home utilizes fuel oil for heat and I realized that the volume of oil used daily, on average, was cut in half! Additionally, my electric bill was significantly reduced, I suppose because the furnace/air handler ran less.
The thermostat has been adjusted to my family's summer schedule. I paid my electric bill today and my electric usage appears to be about 25% less than what I used this time last year. I think the savings is quite significant - it is amazing that such a small improvement can make such a significant change!
